Contest Week Is Tough; Only Two Get 11 Right
 | | Joel Gaston (L), Jack Johnston | Only two players in The Monticello News football contest correctlly picked the winners in as many as 11 games last week.
Jack Johnston and Ryan McDonald were those two, and nine-year-old Jack Johnston was closer on the tie-breaker. Jack guessed 34 points would be scored in the Piedmont Academy-Bulloch playoff game, and Mr. McDonald guessed 45. Piedmont lost 10-7, so the lower number was closest.
Young Jack picked up a $25 prize from Joel Gaston at Jasper County Lumber Co. Mr. Gaston is an avid Auburn fan, and would have been much happier had his Tigers prevailed over the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday. [read more] | Parents Speak Out on School Problems Ted Dunagan 20.NOV.08 Two concerned mothers and one grandmother of Jasper County school students addressed the Jasper County Board of Education at its regular monthly business meeting Tuesday.
Their concerns centered around the safety of students in the system, in school as well as on school busses, lack of discipline of students, failure to apply rules uniformly and as written and disciplinary policies at Jasper County Middle School.

 | | Guests View Silent Auction Items Before Dinner | The second annual “Monticello By Candlelight” silent auction and dinner took place Saturday in the Monticello government complex.
The event benefited Haven House, a non-profit organization serving abused citizens of Jasper, Butts, Lamar and Henry Counties.
At Haven House, women, children and men who are victims of domestic violence, are given a safe home to live in while they receive assistance from Haven House legal advocates, case managers and counselors who work on behalf of the victims to help them establish and begin a new life. One of the suspects had what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon, and demanded money, according to Monticello Police Chief Bud Smith. A generic description portrayed both the robbers as having dark skin and being of slim build and between five-foot-six to six feet tall, with one being slightly taller than the other.
